How to Bathe Your Newborn: A Step-by-Step Guide

Bathing your newborn can feel a little intimidating at first, especially since their delicate skin and tiny size make them seem so fragile. But with a bit of preparation and a gentle approach, bath time can be a bonding experience that you and your baby enjoy!

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before starting, have everything you need within arm’s reach. This includes:

  • A soft washcloth

  • Baby soap or shampoo (mild and tear-free)

  • A cup for rinsing

  • A towel (preferably a hooded one)

  • A fresh diaper and clean clothes

  • A baby bathtub or basin

Safety tip: Never leave your baby unattended during bath time, even for a second.

Step 2: Prepare the Bath

Fill the baby bathtub or basin with 2-3 inches of warm water. The ideal water temperature is around 100°F (37.8°C) – not too hot or too cold. You can test this with your elbow or a thermometer to ensure it’s just right. Also, make sure the room is warm, as babies can get cold easily.

Step 3: Undress Your Baby

Gently undress your newborn and wrap them in a towel to keep them warm while you wash them. Always support their head and neck, especially if your baby is still learning head control.

Step 4: Wash Their Face First

Using a damp washcloth (without soap), gently clean your baby’s face, starting with the eyes and working your way down to their nose and mouth. Always use a clean section of the washcloth for each part of the face to avoid spreading germs.

Step 5: Clean the Body

Once the face is clean, apply a small amount of baby soap to the washcloth and gently wash the rest of their body, starting with the neck and working down. Pay extra attention to the folds of their skin, as milk and dirt can easily collect there.

Step 6: Shampoo Their Hair

If your baby has hair, gently wet their scalp and apply a small amount of baby shampoo. Use the cup to pour water over their head while shielding their face with your hand to prevent soap from getting into their eyes.

Step 7: Rinse and Dry

After you’ve finished washing, carefully rinse your baby’s body with a cup of clean water. Gently lift them out of the tub, supporting their head, and wrap them in a towel. Pat them dry, especially in any creases or folds, to avoid irritation.

Step 8: Moisturize and Dress

If your baby has dry skin, apply a gentle baby lotion. Finally, put on a fresh diaper and some clean clothes, and your newborn is ready for cuddles after their refreshing bath!

With a little practice, bath time will become a cherished routine that both you and your baby will look forward to!
